storage units for blended families

When blending two families into one, things can get rather stressful. Not only do you have to worry about all of the members of each family, but you also have to worry about all of their stuff. How do you make two family's worth of things fit into one house? Can you get rid of some stuff? Should you hold onto the things that aren't really needed? I created this blog to help other blended families learn how to utilize storage units as a way to meet in the middle of some of the disagreements that can arise during the blending process.

Do You Need A Climate-Controlled Unit?

You may have the option to rent a climate-controlled storage unit when you are going to be storing something at a self-storage facility. Something you should understand about a unit with climate control is it usually doesn't cost much at all for you to go with one of them. If you have stuff to store, and you aren't sure if you should opt for climate control, then ask yourself the questions below.

What's the weather like where the storage facility is?

Consider the area the storage facility is located in and the weather you can expect throughout the year. If you are storing your things year-round, then summer and winter will both be considered. However, if you are only storing your things for a short period of time, then you will want to consider the probable weather during those months. If the weather is expected to be mild, then your things may be okay. However, if there is the chance the temps will get quite high or low, or the humidity may be high, then climate control is your best bet.

How much time will you be spending in the storage unit?

If you have a lot of things to tend to in the unit, such as organizing your items, then you are going to want to be in a unit that is kept at a nice temperature. Therefore, you should consider a climate-controlled unit to better accommodate you.

What are the most fragile items you plan on storing?

In order to determine how your things will do in storage, think about the most fragile items you plan on putting in there. These will be the things that can get the most damaged from high or low temps, as well as high humidity. Some examples of things you may want to protect from these conditions include:

  • Leather furniture

  • Wood furniture

  • Paintings

  • Important paperwork

  • Photographs

  • Musical instruments

  • Makeup

  • Stamp or coin collections

The things listed above should be kept at mild temperatures and in an environment with ideal humidity. Otherwise, they can end up being ruined. If you feel confident that your most fragile items will be at risk, then you are going to want to do what you can to protect them. This includes choosing a unit with climate control. You will be grateful for the peace of mind this will offer you while your things are being stored at the facility.
